DoughNotts Opens On Sadler Gate in Derby

Last Night my beak literally did get sticky dear reader, all thanks to the delightful morsels on offer at the opening night of DoughNotts on Derby's Sadler Gate. Owners Megan Scaddan and Wade Smith don’t just serve up any old doughnuts though; the beauties in their premises will have aficionados of these sweet treats queuing around the block to try them!

The celebrations kicked off with glasses of Prosecco and toasts being made and it was made all the more special by the presence of my very good friend, and fellow food blogger, Ria (Ria Amber Tesia). Also present were Monet and Jay, both with their blogging hats on, so it was very much a case of “girl power” :) - love all these ladies!

It was lovely to see the event being well supported and there was a fantastic energy in the air, as well as the mouth-watering smell of freshly baked doughnuts :) I did try to resist their siren call due to going to Brooklyn Social for their “hump day” offer, but as you know dear reader it always end with the score line Sticky Beak & Willpower 0 – Food 1!

Before you could blink, a rather scrummy Red Velvet premium doughnut was finding a very loving home in my tummy, and blimey was it good. His Nibs sampled another premium doughnut, the Salted Caramel Carrot Cake variety; given the speed at which it was devoured I think it safe to say that was delicious too!

The doughnuts themselves are a very generous size and could easily be cut in half to have with elevenses and the afternoon tea break at work. What really grabs your attention though is the sheer amount of luxury topping the premium doughnuts have on them; they don’t merely get their toes dipped in, they have a channel-swims’ worth of topping on! The standard doughnuts are no different either; generous centres of jams, custards and creams catch your eye.

All the doughnuts are good value; premiums are £3 singly, 2-4-£5 or in boxes of 9 or 12 for £23 and £30 respectively, and standard doughnuts are £2 each,3-4-£5 or boxed at 9 for £15, or a dozen for £20.

When you think that Megan and Wade started with a wok, £10 and in one of their mums’ kitchens back in only 2015 you really appreciate the effort they’ve put in to get where they are today. Originally called the Nottingham Doughnut Company, they now go by the nattily named “DoughNotts” moniker. Currently they have shops in Nottingham and Derby, their bakery is in Nottingham, they stock wholesale, cater at events and sell over 10,000 (yes, 10K!!) doughnuts every week!

As a general rule-of-thumb they carry 18 flavours; some are standard always available ones, others change weekly / routinely. There are vegan doughnuts available too; the Vegan Chocolate and Cherry doughnuts will be on the menu for the new Derby store and for their Nottingham store all week :)

Megan very kindly let us take a box of four doughnuts back to the nest and we let The Chick do some sampling with us. Chickadee spied the Red Velvet one straightaway and walloped that down with indecent haste (good job I’d already had that one earlier!); like me she was amazed at how incredibly good it was, you really do get the red velvet cake flavour from the topping.

Everyone loves the Cookie Monster and his bright blue fur, so it seemed only fitting that the Cookies and Cream doughnut paid homage to this with its azure frosting. Another classic combo is Salted Caramel and there was a lovely deep layer of this on top of the doughnut that just covered your mouth when you bit into it; nom! Death by Chocolate, as you can imagine, was a total celebration of chocolatiness, and wowsers what a way to end our evening!

The toppings are what steal the show in all honesty, but the crucial detail is that the base doughnuts are top quality. The doughnuts have a springiness that makes it a pleasure to bite into them, and there is no trace of greasiness to them either. That saying of “you can’t make a silk purse from a sows’ ear” has never rung truer; however much topping you put on a greasy, stale doughnut you’ll never disguise its nastiness. Megan and Wade really put their heart and souls into their produce and you can taste it in every bite; trust me, you’re never going to have a bad doughnut from this team!

Today (Thursday 31st August 2017) is their official opening day, so pop down to Derbys’ Sadler Gate and pay them a visit. As well as delicious doughnuts they serve up a wickedly good cup of coffee (by 200 degrees).

DoughNotts are open Tuesday - Saturday 9am until 5pm, with shorter opening hours on Sundays; they have a day off on Mondays, and who can blame them?!

Thank you for inviting us to share your opening celebrations and letting us sample some of the many flavours on offer in your store. We wish you every success for the future in Derby :)
