I swear I’m going [even more] bonkers! If you’d told me that it’s been a couple of years since we’ve been to the Endeavour Café in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, I’d have laughed in your face…but, no, that is how long it’s been since I last got my laughing gear around some of the scrummiest Crab sarnies in Northumberland! As luck would have it, the lovely Michelle was in the kitchen, so we had a big hug and catch up before she had to get back to the grind.
The Endeavour may be relatively small, but the food and service are far from it; portions are always more than big enough, matched by the welcome. We had plans already for a dinner out, so we didn’t want to particularly fill up…or at least that was the plan until His Nibs ordered the Burger!
Michelle serves her Beef Burgers with Chips, Onion Rings, Salad, Coleslaw and relish, so it was hardly going to be a light lunch for The Man, was it? Whatever, that was what he fancied so that’s what he ordered; Mummy opted for the Vegetable Soup and Bread Roll, and I had a Crab Claw-meat Sandwich on Brown Bread, which comes with Crisps and Salad.
I always say it, but food doesn’t have to be posh and complicated to be good; it just needs to be fresh, tasty, and be made with good-quality ingredients and love. The Endeavour Café ticks all these boxes and adds good value into the equation, too – which, let’s face it, we all want.
My sandwich was crammed full of sweet, fragrant Crab Meat, mingling beautifully with the malty taste of the springy, fresh bread as I chewed this fab morsel. Crunchy ready-salted crips added a great hit of texture, as did the crisp salad. This was a perfect lunchtime bite; satiating but not heavy on the digestion.
Mummy Bird got a proper hefty bowl full of chunky Veg soup, and Michelle had thoughtfully put the butter packets near the bowl so that the contents were soft to spread easily on the bread roll. It’s the little touches that make a big difference, especially if your grip strength isn’t great; much appreciated by Mummy, Michelle. I think that soup is often under-rated, but our Flock love nothing more than a hearty homemade one over autumn and winter: guess how I spend my weekend afternoons in the colder months?!
His Nibs’ Burger was pleasingly dense in texture, with a super chew time to it that meant you savoured its flavour properly. Housed between the bread bun was, literally, just the Beef patty; the relish was in a separate bowl (just in case it wasn’t wanted/needed) and the salad was also to the side as, again, not everyone likes salad on their burger. Michelle serves crinkle-cut chips and they were beautifully crisp on the outside, their golden ridges accented by cooking, and the inners were soft and fluffy. Just as crispy as the chips were the perfectly done Onion rings – they audibly crunched when bitten into. I am just going to say that His Maj still managed to scoff a substantial 2-course dinner later that evening!
With these meals, tea for two and a Hot Chocolate, the bill was £33; not bad at all, we thought. Hot Wings given to my lovely friend and her team; they pulled it out of the bag yet again…now I mustn’t leave it nearly two years until the next visit! The Endeavour is open 7-days-a-week from 9am-5pm and you can give the team a ring on 01670 850092 to book a table; there’s also a Facebook Page: The Endeavour Licensed Restaurant and Coffee Shop to browse if you’re so minded. Dogs are also welcome in the smaller side (to the left as you go in).
