It might be a bit nerdy for me to admit this but, sometimes, a bit of forward planning really does pay off. Bestie and me had been lucky enough to snag ourselves tickets to see P!nk and so we came up with the plan to stay over, then come back to Beak H.Q., and go to Nottingham on the train the next day (with His Nibs) to meet up with her hubby (TBW) and celebrate The Man’s birthday together at Revolucion De Cuba.
We emailed Hannah (the lovely Sales Manager at RDC, Nottingham) who got our Bottomless Brunch booking sorted out, kindly ‘comping’ mine and the Birthday boy’s places; thank you 😊. Revolucion host their bottomless brunches between 11am-4pm and have a single price for whichever time slot you go for – how much simpler is that? The only decision you have to make for your 90 minutes is whether to go for the regular (£30 per person) or premium option (£40 pp): what’s the difference I hear you ask? Allow me to explain…
Both options see you served with scrummy Tortilla chips and Salsa to nibble at on arrival, and you can choose from San Miguel lager, Mimosas, Prosecco, Strawberry Daiquiri, Aperol Spritz, Disaronno Fizz and Cuban Iced Tea cocktails. You also get a huge bowl of Patatas Bravas with your hot food on either option. The extra tenner allows you to upgrade your brunch dish to a lunch dish (Burrito, Burrito Bowl or Burger) and access some additional cocktails: Pineapple Daiquiri, Pornstar Rumtini, Classic Mojito, Bloody Mary and Rum Perfect Serves – a selection of RDC’s fave rums served with their perfect mixer!
All bookings require a 20% deposit to secure it, with the balance and your pre-order of dish/es needed one week before your visit. We went for the regular brunch option and didn’t feel as if we’d missed out on anything and, given that my appetite always nose-dives in the heat (and it was blooming hot on the day we visited!), I was glad our group was only having a single dish.
Nottingham has plenty of old, imposing buildings within its walls and the Revolucion De Cuba premises have the most incredibly high ceilings, which certainly gives it the wow factor as soon as you step inside 😊. We were greeted really warmly by the front-of-house host and shown to our table which was laden with flower garlands and Maracas, which BB and I wasted no time in picking up and making music with – well, it was a birthday celebration after all!! Whenever we’ve visited the RDC Nottingham site, we’ve always had a fabulous time; there’s always uplifting music playing and the vibe is happy: what’s not to love?
Kiera was our designated server and no sooner had she said ‘hello’ than she was scampering off, returning moments later with two bowls of Tortillas and Salsa and a quartet of Mimosas to welcome us with 😊. We weren’t the only ones partaking in Bottomless Brunch and the space was filled with laughter and a lively stream of conversation. #partycentral 😊. Our first round of cocktails ‘proper’ were a pair of Cuban Iced Teas for the chaps and Strawberry Daiquiris for BB and me – yum! Kiera brought them over and they were literally picture perfect with their mint and fruit garnishes, and they tasted every bit as good as they looked.
Having slaked our thirst cos, y’know, being in an air-conditioned venue was making us thirsty (!) we were nibbling away merrily on the super-crunchy Tortillas and then our brunch dishes appeared as if by magic. Now, Kiera is my kinda gal; in fact, she’d be everybody’s kind of lass because she is a whizz at time management: she clearly figured that, whilst she was with us bringing our food out, she might as well get our next round of drinks ordered! I like your style, Kiera 😊. The lads were sticking to their Iced Teas, BB stayed with her fruity Daiquiri and I went for the Disaronno Fizz (veeeeeery nice, in case you’re wondering, unless you don’t like Almonds – in which case, you’ll hate it).
All four of us had gone for different dishes! TBW went for a Full Grilled Breakfast, BB had the Bacon Quesadilla, His Nibs had his usual Chorizo Hash (he does love that), and I fancied the Avocado Brunch with added Poached Egg. Now, you all know that The Man Bird can plough through a full brekkie of Bacon, Fried Egg, Mushrooms, Tomato, Sausage, Beans and Bread at a fair old rate of Knotts but, crikey, The Bolton Wanderer could certainly give him a run for his money in the speed stakes! When I mentioned that the brunch had seemed to hit the spot, TBW replied “that was one of the tastiest breakfasts I’ve had, believe it or not”.
Maybe it’s me (it probably is, to be fair) but, whenever I’ve made a Hash, I’ve made a right, well, hash of it and it’s ended up looking like something the dog brought back up! Chef at RDC Nottingham has a bit more flair and certainly a great deal more skill than me because the Chorizo Hash actually looked lovely, with plenty of colour and texture to it. Amongst the crispy fried Potato were chunks of spicy Chorizo and Peppers and the carnival of flavour was added to by a silky Cheese sauce, rich egg and crunchy Spring onions. Needless to say, The Man Bird made sure that not a single crumb was left on the plate 😊.
Bestie Bird was very happy with her choice of Bacon Quesadilla and, I have to say, it was presented beautifully. An oblong, pale blue, mottled-glaze platter was laden with quarters of Pico de Gallo topped, toasted Tortillas that had been covered with cheese and then scattered with fresh, chopped herbs. The aromas that drifted up from BB’s platter were really making my nose twitch! Nestled between the two layers of crunchy, toasted Tortilla was a mix of Mozzarella, Smoked Cheddar and Mexicana Cheese, along with slices of Streaky Bacon; no wonder BB was grinning like the proverbial Cheshire Cat as she munched away at her morsel! As if there wasn’t enough scrumminess on her plate, the Bacon Queso also comes with Patatas Bravas on the side!
Called me biased, but my dish, Avocado Brunch with Poached Egg, took the prize for the beauty award on our table, in my opinion! The kitchen team at Nottingham’s Revolucion de Cuba clearly take pride in what leaves the pass anyway, given the standard of dishes that arrived at our table, but with its verdant carpet of fresh herbs, my dish epitomised summer dining 😊. Like the Man Bird, my choice came served on a cream-toned plate that allowed the shades of green, rosy Plum Tomato, and pale egg white to pop and stimulate the visual sense. I liked the fact that the toasted Sourdough wasn’t sliced too thick – there’s nothing worse than having to saw your way through bread! A nice layer of smashed Avo provided a secure base for the plentiful Tomato cubes to sit on, and each slice had a poached egg on it, so you certainly get plenty of protein in this dish. Coriander added its notes to the dish, partnered nicely by the finely sliced Spring Onions. Kiera had checked we were enjoying our food and was rewarded by four squeaky clean plates to take back to the kitchen.
Whilst we’d been eating, Kiera had got another round of cocktails for us, as well as some iced water – gotta drink responsibly folks, especially on hot days! BB and TBW had Strawberry Daiquiris, His Nibs stuck to the Cuban Iced Teas (a variation on his beloved Long Island Iced Tea), and I had an Aperol Spritz, one of my favourite summer cocktails 😊.
What I like about Bottomless Brunches at Revolucion de Cuba is that you get a gentle reminder that your brunch session is coming to a close in about 15 minutes which allows you to order any final drinks that you fancy; we plumped for a glass (or two!) of Prosecco to toast His Nibs’ birthday and the fact that ‘the fun four’ were all together.
Bidding farewell to Kiera and her fellow team members, we went back down the stairs to the entrance and out into the wall of heat…come back, air-con!! Yet again, the RDC team had come up trumps for a celebratory occasion and provided the perfect combo of fab food and drink – Hot Wings happily awarded here 😊. And thank you again to Hannah for setting this up for us, we really appreciate it x
