If there’s a hole in the planning of your perfect wedding, and that issue is the cake, Nottingham based Doughnotts has the answer.
With wedding season in full swing, the issue that the traditional fruit cake is not for everyone has become apparent. In fact, even back in 2022, British Baker magazine wrote that fruit cake had been voted the most ‘boring’ by the under 35s.
As a result, there’s been sponge, cheese towers, prawn fountains and cupcake wedding alternatives. And now, Doughnotts has stepped in with its own sweet solution.
The bakery has quite literally put the icing on the cake for hundreds of couples’ big days by introducing Wedding Doughnuts to its range.
Two newly married couples have shared their experiences of tying the knot with a very individual doughnut wedding cake from Doughnotts.
Sweet nuptials
Eli (29) and Ilia (31), from Guildford, in Surrey, got married at Nottingham’s landmark venue Wollaton Hall in May.
Making all their wedding plans together, it was a joint decision to embrace the idea of a doughnut wedding cake and, when it came down to it, they both said “I do” to Doughnotts.
Eli said: “Doughnuts are one of my favourite foods and our wedding was all about being fun and having a great time with one another. So, we thought, let's have a wedding cake that we actually want and will love to eat! In our opinion, fruit cakes are just for the winter with a nice bit of cheese.”
With Eli’s family living locally, the Doughnotts brand was already on the couple’s mind. Keen to support a local business, they selected a vegan Biscoff doughnut cake adorned with bride and groom decorated doughnuts on top. The couple catered for 40 guests.
Eli said: “We'd enjoyed the doughnuts sold at the firm’s Nottingham store, so it was an easy decision to go with Doughnotts for our wedding cake. We especially loved the bride and groom doughnuts on top, they were so fun!”
Bucking the trend among their friends, the couple were the first in their group to opt for such a cake. Eli said that, from the moment they decided on the cake, guests were told.
"I was so excited for it and they were excited to see it and thoroughly enjoyed eating it," she said.
The couple’s love of good food was a theme that ran throughout the wedding, from the wedding favours - decorative candles in the shape of either a wedge of cheese or a croissant - to the table names, which listed favourite foods, with ‘Doughnut’ for the top table of course.
The beautiful bride stepped out in style and, in homage to their theme, Eli's socks featured images of doughnuts too!
Eli said: “Everyone loved the cake and we got so many compliments on it and how nice it was to have a change from a fruit cake at a wedding.
“I would certainly recommend Doughnotts to my friends. They were a pleasure to deal with and happily ran through the different style, flavour, and dietary options available. We were really happy with their service and would recommend to others for celebration cakes.”
We loved our wedding ‘ring’
Esther and Mat, originally from Hartlepool and Chatham respectively, now live in Beeston, which is also home to one of Doughnotts’ original stores. The couple tied the knot at Beeston Parish Church before heading to Donington Park Farmhouse for their wedding reception.
While there are many decisions to make during wedding planning, selecting a wedding cake was an easy one, according to the couple, who succinctly declared: “We wanted something a bit different and we bloody love Doughnotts!”
Esther said: “I’m a big doughnut fan. We buy a Doughnotts doughnut maybe once a month - I get them as a treat! My favourite is Cookie Monster and Mat’s is a simple glazed one!”
The couple opted for the Bride and Groom doughnut cake with Biscoff layers and a buttercream border in muted purple to match the bridesmaids' dresses. As an addition, they also ordered 50 mini doughnuts as they were catering for over 120 people.
Esther said: “We absolutely loved our cake and doughnuts. So did our guests and they absolutely demolished everything, so I think that speaks for itself – it was a huge hit!!
The couple did look around for their special day cake but, as Esther said, it was “the little doughnut people on top that won me over”.
She added: “I loved our cakes and Doughnotts were fab to deal with.”
Doughnotts has a variety of wedding doughnut packages including celebration cakes, doughnut towers and everything from mini to supersized doughnuts.
