The Food Assembly is an online farmers market where customers can purchase food from a range of local producers and collect it from them directly at one location during the week. The aim is to encourage people to buy directly from local producers, to link people to local produce and to create a community around this food.
The Food Assembly launched in the UK in July 2014 with the first Food Assembly popping up in London’s Hackney, then another close to Wales, in Chester. Now there are Food Assemblies all over the UK. Each Food Assembly is an independent and local project while remaining part of The Food Assembly collective.
The Food Assembly comes to Derby in March 2015 with the first event being on the 15th March from 5pm until 7pm and then every Tuesday after that. The collection point for the Market is the Greyhound Pub on Friar Gate in Derby.
The online market will work the same as any sort of online shopping, whereby you select your items that you want and pay for your basket at the end. The online market will be open from Wednesday and will close on Sunday evening, allowing producers the Monday and Tuesday to get orders ready for collection at the assembly.
The sorts of produce that we will be available are: vegetables, meat, sausages, pork pies, vegetarian pies, breads, eggs, honey, preserves, cheese, smoked goods, pyclets, ales, coffee, chocolate and hopefully more (wine, game, fish, rapeseed oil, charcuterie).
All these products will be from within about 30 miles of Derby and their producers will be at every assembly allowing customers to find out about the food they are eating, creating links with their food community, and to support the local economy.
Organiser Sarah Green said
“We are essentially bringing the farmers market to Derby at a convenient time, and to the pub!”
“We are launching on the 15th of March at The Greyhound pub on Friar Gate and the assembly is from 5pm until 7pm. The idea is to allow customers to collect their produce on their way home from work, and of course stop for a pint at the same time!”
