Hope Valley gastropub, the Samuel Fox Country Inn, scooped two awards at the recent Sheffield Westside Restaurant of the Year Awards dinner held at Baldwin’s Omega in Sheffield. In addition to being named Westside’s Best Pub Restaurant it claimed the top honour too, as Westside’s Restaurant of the Year 2015. The Samuel Fox beat off stiff completion from 30 short listed dining venues across Sheffield and Derbyshire to lift the top accolade, just a year after being named Best Newcomer in the last ever Derbyshire Food and Drink Awards.
The Samuel Fox is in the village of Bradwell, a working village in the Hope Valley, just a stone’s throw from the busy tourist villages of Castleton, Hope and Hathersage. The Inn is named after Bradwell’s most famous son, the Victorian industrialist and philanthropist who founded the eponymous steelworks at Stocksbridge and is credited with inventing the modern Paragon steel umbrella frame.
Since October 2012 the Samuel Fox has been in the ownership of accomplished chef, James Duckett in whose hands, in addition to these welcome regional awards, has secured a recommendation in the Michelin Guide, scored well in the Good Food Guide and been awarded two rosettes in the AA Restaurant Guide. The Inn has, also four beautifully appointed en suite rooms, making it a great place from which to explore the Peak Park and its many attractions.
Tastefully decorated and furnished restaurant and bar areas and large south facing windows and terrace offering glorious views towards the impressive Bradwell Edge make the Samuel Fox a great place to meet friends and enjoy a pint of local real ale or one of 14 wines available by the glass together. The restaurant is also very popular on eltenedor website
But what really sets the Samuel Fox apart is James’s imaginative cooking. In this there is more than a glimpse of his impressive record of over 20 years as a chef, many spent working under some of the best known names in London. Further afield, he’s worked in top establishments in France, Netherlands (Fitchef), Spain, and Australia as well as spending some time pandering to the rich and famous on super yachts in the Caribbean. He’s passionate about his craft, with the emphasis on creating unique flavour combinations using fresh, seasonal and, wherever possible, local produce but drawing on his global cooking experiences.
His dishes are beautifully crafted with punchy, robust flavours served in relaxed surroundings. This is refined pub dining at its very best. Open for lunches Friday to Saturday and for dinner Wednesday through Sunday, this is a rare treat of a restaurant. Whether you opt for an ‘early bird’ supper, at £20.00 for three courses served Thursday to Saturday, plus extra 5% off with Eat Chefly Voucher Code, choose from James’s à la carte menu, or splash out on his seven course tasting menu, with the option of a matching wine flight, your taste buds are in for a real treat.
For more information see the Samuel Fox website, at www.samuelfox.co.uk. All James’s menus may be viewed and downloaded from here and the site includes also an online table booking facility.
